i could write an essay on the normalization of abuse in midwestern families. it goes undetected most of the time because theres so much stigma against “getting involved” in the business of others and a general culture of confrontation avoidance that even if other people know what is going on they wont do anything. because its a cardinal sin to “rock the boat” in any way, so to speak

and because of this, kids end up with virtually no support network. there are no adults in their lives to protect them, or explain to them that what theyre experiencing isnt normal.
