The LLM discourse on the Fediverse has really irked me the last few days.
Refusing to read writing made with the use of LLMs and refusing to give time to writers who use, promote or justify the use of LLMs is not purity culture, it's a boycott. It's a political act of withdrawing my time, resources and support for something that I find deeply morally wrong. It's protest. I have a choice and I refuse.
LLMs are exploitative, destructive, biased, mediocre parroting machines. Using them has a negative impact on the climate, the arts, the quality of the internet, the job market, the economy, the accessibility of electronics, even on skill development, creativity and mental health. LLMs are made and trained on the unpaid labour of millions -if not billions- of people who didn't consent. Their generic output litter the path to finding anything by true human creators.
Wherever I can, for as long as I can, I reject LLMs and anything that is related to them. I'm boycotting.
I want you to spread the word that Tim O'Reilly of O'Reilly Media is forcing his editors to "use" Gen AI as much as possible. The book I wrote for them, Hacker Culture: A to Z, is probably the last non-tech manual they ever published that isn't tainted by Gen AI.
I quit my goddamn fucking professor position at OPIT because I would rather risk my ability to pay my rent than subject my students to Gen AI "e proctoring."
Please check out https://stopgenai.com, I beg of you.
@erkhyan oh I like a nice bit of rain. Yes, a *bit* of rain.
Question for the Fedi: Is it possible to follow an RSS feed from a blog or website here on Mastodon?
For example: I want to see posts from a particular subreddit in my Mastodon feed. Reddit isn't Fedi, but every sub is an RSS feed. I'd want to see every new post from a subreddit as an item in my Mastodon feed. Is this possible?
Please Boost this post so it can get as many eyes on it as possible so I can get an answer. Thank you!
Game Jam for Free Software Desktop Games

The folks at GNU/Linux València are organizing a Game Jam focused on Free Software Desktop Games. You can see the details here: https://itch.io/jam/lliurejam Maybe we could take the opportunity to try to revive a bit the very very very dormant KDE Games…

The EU is working on what is in essence a new Open Source strategy for Europe, and the call for evidence is now open. This is our cue to provide feedback and input to the strategy!
If you are involved in the Open Source community in any way, if you benefit (or could benefit) in any way from Open Source, or if you're simply interested in questions about digital sovereignty, please visit https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/16213-European-Open-Digital-Ecosystems_en for details on how to contribute.
Let's ask the real question:
Firefox users,
do you want any AI directly built into Firefox, or separated out into extensions?

Unfortunately my employer of 10 years had to let me go at the end of 2025. I’m still officially with them for the next 3 months, but if anyone is looking for a software developer with 25 years experience across various platforms, most recently in Android app development, please get in touch!
I’ve been officially working in human-centric application development in various forms since 2002, and I am keen that the end user is afforded the best experience possible. I enjoy working as part of distributed multi-disciplinary teams and the challenges that complex systems provide - developing a broad understanding and overview I feel is important to help with integration.
I am based in Berlin amd have a preference for working remotely for an employer within Germany (tho a local office would also be an option)
The @dotmeow kickstarter 75% of the way there! Almost time to kick out the digital landlords behind most gTLDs!
If you're an artist/writer/creator using AI, then no, you're not a creator. You're a client commissioning that creation and stealing the creator's attribution.
Worse, you're choosing to commission a creator notorious for plagiarism where originality is needed and for fiction where truthfulness is needed.
Yet worse still, you're choosing to commission a creator so unethical that plagiarism and misinformation are the least of its ethical failings.
One of the best activities to wrap up the year with? Reading over 2500 donor comments for @kde's fundraiser. Thank you to everyone who donated to make our work over the next year possible! Here are some of my favorite notes donors left with their donation. 💙 🐉

Not that I expect many people following me to do so, but if you think the EU's DSA is about "Censorship" (at least in a bad way) you should read this thread...
Ireland: Since the Guardian are doing the "a handful of women’s groups have started to question the “unintended consequences”" thing of Self Determination and the Irish GRA 2015, time to repost the open letter from Irish feminists telling UK transphobes to piss off ...
@kootenay merry hatchmas! :>
@electrikjesus @carl at a wild guess... stickerapp? :) (it sounds kind of sketch, but they're genuinely excellent)
I would like to propose SOSS: Sponsored Open Source Software.
If your company uses OSS, you sponsor the project $100/year.
Not per seat, or per team, just $100/year, all in.
- 30 developers using Ghostty? $100
- 300,000 engineers using tmux? $100, total
You audit the OSS you use (OSS tools for this would quickly emerge, $100, thank you). You set up a bunch of annual $100 sponsorships. Everyone wins.
This guarantees the longevity of that tiny piece of code propping up your bank.
It’s publication day for my short story collection, The Analog Cat! ⌚🐈
If you enjoy the kind of whimsical nonsense I post to social media, my fiction is pretty much the same thing but longer and with a plot.

Petition in Germany to recognize unpaid contribution to free and open source software projects as 'society-beneficial volunteering' (ehrenamt)!
This will give volunteering for e.g. @postmarketOS , @freifunk , @kde , @nextcloud , @Mastodon and other libre projects the same legal status as taking care of an elderly family member, which provides tax benefits and relaxes requirements for receiving unemployment benefits.
Please only sign the petition if you're a legal resident of Germany.
