I keep seeing boosts of a post about how the .ORG domain was bought by a private equity firm and they're going to dramatically raise the price, but that sale was rejected by ICANN in April 2020 and the Public Interest Registry, the folks who've run .ORG since 2003, still run it. I love you all, but that post you're boosting is over three years old. You can stop boosting it now. Please. :)

homer brain: the government will get us out of this
normal brain: the government is trying to kill me
exploding brain: the government doesn't care if I live or die
galaxy brain: the uk government is incapable of caring if you live or die and will remain incapable until there is a class war cuminating in a successful worker led revolution
@Doran_Eirok This is adorable :) i hope the idea-haver shares an update on the reaction it garnered :D
Introduction
So here we are on a new social network thingy. We've seen a lot of them since 2001 (still miss LiveJournal), but time marches on.
We'll mostly be using this account for announcements, which is pretty much the same way we used the account on that other place we won't mention here.
Thanks to the meow.social folks for a home here!
> The PSP's web browser is - charitably - pathetic. It is slow, frequently runs out of memory, and can only open 3 tabs at a time... But the GOV.UK pages are written in simple HTML. They are designed to be lightweight and will work even on rubbish browsers. They have to. This is for everyone...
> Are you developing public services? Or a system that people might access when they're in desperate need of help? Plain HTML works. A small bit of simple CSS will make look decent. JavaScript is probably unnecessary - but can be used to progressively enhance stuff. Add alt text to images so people paying per MB can understand what the images are for (and, you know, accessibility).
> Go sit in an uncomfortable chair, in an uncomfortable location, and stare at an uncomfortably small screen with an uncomfortably outdated web browser. How easy is it to use the websites you've created?

@tdfischer There is - and it looks so very, very good :D
#ICYMI the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention has announced that the so-called "gender critical"/TERF movement is fascist and genocidal.
"The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention voices its concern over the growing number of laws introduced in the United States that target transgender individuals and the transgender community. Anti-trans hostility in the US has become a staple of the Republican Party’s election strategy and is clearly being used to stoke voters’ fears of a changing world by raising the specter of a malevolent polluting force tied to liberalism, cosmopolitanism, and democracy. The Lemkin Institute believes that the so-called 'gender critical movement' that is behind these laws is a fascist movement furthering a specifically genocidal ideology that seeks the complete eradication of trans identity from the world."
@chel *giggles* it rather does, doesn't it? :D
Yes, it's literally built for comfortable sightseeing trips, and it's also a lovely place to do chat show type things (King's Corner is now hosted on one a lot of the time... started before The Only Constant arrived as well, so who's copying whom, Jared? ;) )
@chel Never been much of a sports fan, but... might park the Phoenix nearby and hang for this one :)
Writers are taught not to write wish-fulfillment—it's too easy, boring, or low stakes. But that reasoning is wrong. It only seems that way because we've all already read thousands of wish-fulfillment stories about cis het able-bodied white males, so they're very... predictable.
For every other demographic?
Readers actively, desperately crave wish-fulfillment stories about themselves, because they rarely if ever see them.
Apparently there are people out there who think it's inappropriate to use Mastodon to talk about books you've written or promote projects you've worked on because it's marketing and self-promotion?
I am not one of those people. I implore you to write about the work you have done and the things you have made - I want to hear about that stuff!
Mastodon, the service, is pretty great, actually. It's bigger than any of us, and it has the tools to create whatever experience you want. Everybody says so!
But this idea that Mastodon and Mastodon users were pure and good while every other social media site, but especially That Place, was full of nothing but clout-chasing sociopaths who need to be driven off with a broom before they bring their bad habits here is extremely pretentious.
It's also really white.
We are nearing the end of our #fundraiser and we still have a bit to go. #Donate now and get your hands on some cool digital #goodies! Such as "I donated" badges to display on your social media, designs for digital and printed cards, and the new #Katie and #Konqi Santa mascots.
@kauko For me, it's a case of "bunch of people around me i want to not annoy" but also i suspect it's easier to portray sound on youtube than it is feel ;) It's annoying though, yeah
@justinz @jriddell @kdecommunity that does have a very strong "...are you serious?" energy about it :) i imagine the topic is people suggesting that any code written with public money should be able to be closed source in any way, or that energy conservation is somehow irrelevant for free software projects ;)
