Rome entered a terminal crisis in the 200s AD. But it took 200 more years for the western half of the empire to fall and 1,200 years for the eastern half to finally bite it.

Despite its failure, successor civilizations used its memory to claim legitimacy for millennia, with the Holy Roman Empire not ending until less than 200 years ago. The state religions of both the eastern and western empires persist to this very day.

Political and social systems can continue on for literally eons after they've proven themselves to be irredeemably defective.

I think about that when people talk about "Late Capitalism."

For a touch of background, this story was born out of a somewhat random ych i got a while ago - it then also diverged greatly, but still, this was what caused the story to exist :) weasyl.com/~oddthesungod/submi

“A female colleague and [I] had dared to discuss wage transparency and gender pay gap in the office … Unfortunately we miscalculated – our boss Matthias was beyond furious. After that office meeting, he told my colleague ‘there will be consequences.’ … I want to expose the hypocrisy and double standards in FSFE leadership. How the organisation ‘promoting’ transparency, equality and inclusivity treats employees and more specifically women.”

Brexit

Just heard an advert reminding EU citizens that their settled status doesn't apply to their children who must apply separately to else they may lose access to the NHS and education.

Please pass this along to anyone you think may be effected as this is quite important.

What kind of country have we decided to become? This is awful policy.

The sign said ENERGY IS A FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT.
The robot carried it up and down the square for five months, only pausing when their friends brought replacement batteries.
When their campaign won, and robots were given right to energy, they continued, with a new sign.

info request re changing name and gender marker in the uk, boost please!

hello!!! i am attempting a big project and would appreciate some input. i'm trying to cover the process of changing your name and gender marker with as many UK organisations as possible so if you've done this with for example, a bank/card provider, insurance company, utilities provider or on your vehicle log book, or anything else you can think of, and you can decribe the process to me, i would LOVE that! "We moved to GitHub because everyone's already there"

"We shut down the mailing lists because most of our users prefer to use GitLab in their web browser"

"We're rewriting in Rust because we don't really have any non-x86_64 users"

"We're leaving IRC because Discord is more user-friendly"

What all of these arguments have in common is that they exclude people, centralize infrastructure, and eschew free software for proprietary solutions, all in the name of some ill-defined measure of "progress".
