inexplicable tech news time: at some point this year on the thought-to-be-abandoned isp.netscape.com/ page, a download browser link appeared at the bottom of the page, which in turn grabs a bespoke installer for a supposed new version of netscape browser

what this installer is actually doing is just extracting custom branding and an extension into a folder before running google's mini_installer exe silently

despite the web page correctly displaying "Yahoo inc" as the copyright holder, the installer name references aol, the installer itself links to verizon pages and the about page references oath inc. theyre all the same company these days but yahoo inc is the current name.

this browser is also significantly out of date, the version it installs originally came out back in february of this year.

and despite all of this, i dont think any sort of announcement or fanfare was made of this. it just...exists. as a thing you can install. for whatever reason.

its maybe one of the most baffling things ive seen in a while lmao

@avie my guess is it might be something they just did to retain the trademark? if they weren't actively using it for a browser it could be considered abandoned and someone else could take it
