i tried to use one of those scraper services to fill in the gaps in the metadata and it just plain got a lot of things wrong like labelling 5 different megaman games all as "Mega Man 2". so now i have to go into some xml files and manually fix it all i guess........

I bought the bundle with an SD card full of roms both cos i'm lazy and like to see what they include. It's kind of a mess though with a lot of different sets that make no sense, inconsistent metadata/images etc. also there are no mario or pokemon games because they are cowards

Like there was an update and I installed it & it made the menu layout better but now a bunch of emulators don't have sound. Linux shit

General impressions: Screen very good, controls decent, plastic feels a bit cheap. It's fully open source & came with JELOS out of the box which is decent but lots of rough linuxy edges and 1000 settings to fiddle with, def a tinkerer's device

This is the emulator console with a square screen that I bought cos I thought it'd be ideal for tate arcade games, and it kinda is!!

She pow on my kiddy til I *EXTREMELY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER*

I've been manually crossposting all that pocket stuff today & it's making me think I should maybe set up something automated, if that's even possible with the current state of ex-twitter...
I didn't want to do that before because I thought I'd probably only be active on one site & didn't want to be firing off auto posts to an account I never check.
But I'm now finding myself active on both and really if I have something interesting/stupid to post I prob do want to share it with both audiences

The Analogue Pocket was Not the only handheld to arrive into my possession today btw but I'll maybe post about the other one tomorrow

so leaving aside its compatibility with weird carts.... my overall Gamer Opinion so far is that yes the screen is very very good and just about the best these games are ever gonna look
BUT i think it's less comfortable to actually play on than any official gameboy model i own? it's kind of a big heavy unergonomic brick of a thing

Show thread

it wasn't sunny enough when i opened it to charge the glow in the dark i guess so i'll have to try and do that tomorrow and see how glowy it gets

Show thread

It has this library section which is supposed to log all the games you played but it only works on official carts so only one of the 30 I've tried is showing up lol

Show thread

more findings
- the Sintax GBA games with the "simpler" protection that work on DS work here too
- generally most unlicensed single game carts work
- multicarts are hit and miss but more work than don't work. sadly the VF 12 in 1 doesn't work
- strangely Li Cheng carts with their very simple protection don't seem to work, I wonder if the BIOS is rejecting the "Niutoude" logo (and does that mean this clone bios has a stricter logo check than the original....)

More working games. The last one is GBA. Vast Fame's GBA games work but Sintax's don't. Honestly not surprising, they're picky enough about boot timing that they mostly don't even work on a DS, if anything was gonna fail I'd expect it to be those

Show thread

The hit rate for unlicensed games (and multicarts) seems Pretty Good, I've only had a couple of failures so far

Show thread

First impressions the screen fully bangs on this
And the tilt sensor works on this game which tbh is expected but hey
Next I'll try some really fucked up stuff
