@ansuz@gts.cryptography.dog I'm not from the UK either but it's only one of the more clear cut examples. As a trans woman growing up in the 80s/90s I know my share of what epistemic injustice can do to a life.

There resides
a lot of power in deciding what is "appropriate for children". As a society we often treat it as a given, as something that is common sense. But it is really far from common sense - it is wildly political, often not common sense (as in counter-intuitive when looking at the science) and thus using it as a populist topic will most likely hurt children more than help them. (And don't get me started on adultism...)

And that's
only looking at it wrt. children, not counting all the other problems with such a system.

A lot of problems with youth's internet usage would be solved if we'd restrict systems that are
generally harmful to everyone. Such as addictive algorithms and UX design.

<sarcasm>I wonder why
that is not the louder discussion... ๐Ÿค”</sarcasm>

Once more, for the people who missed my previous rants on the topic: It's okay to adopt the stance that age verification is a bad idea.

You don't need to weaken your position by saying it might be okay if they eventually used Zero-Knowledge Proofs or pseudonymous systems.

First, such schemes aren't suitable for this domain even at a theoretical level. If you think they might then you don't understand the problem.

Second, even if ZKP was an applicable solution, it would still prevent undocumented people from accessing the internet like those that various governments choose to recognize as human.

Third, one goal of a functioning society ought to be producing responsible adults, and treating them as complete children until they suddenly turn 18 is not a reasonable way to accomplish that.

Government-mandated age verification for the internet is bad public policy, and it's 100% okay to say as much.

Everyone knows the palace of Westminster is too small and falling down. But Greater Manchester has this big ornate building with dedicated transport links and whose original purpose is rapidly becoming obsolete? It's perfect. They could have debates in the food court

Dear furries and the furry-adjacent,

This is your periodic reminder that the artist Ken Sample - also known as Ken Cougr - is widely credited as having invented the very concept of a fursona, and that he is a Black man.

And courtesy of @bennie, in the replies to the vulpine.club edition of this post: "Reminder that Ken is around still and has a Patreon: patreon.com/KenCougr "

Reasons we fly a pride flag:

Leaving the house this morning, there was a kid, maybe grade 5, no rain gear, sitting on our front step.

I was obviously a little startled

Me: uhm...hi? Can I help you?

Kid: oh! No, I'm just taking a break my mom told me that if I ever need to ask an adult for help I should look for a house with a rainbow flag because that means it's safe. I don't need help, just a dry spot for calling my friend to bring my rain coat.

And then his friend rocked up with his coat and off they went.

what if the real reason for the social media ban is so that young people can't make friends internationally and thus don't find out that things are better elsewhere, or that Other Opinions also exist.

You couldn't make the office today. Forces beyond our ken would convene to make you trip and fall every time you try. Your computer would break losing your progress on the script. Traffic jams and power outages. This is the hidden law of the world

Oswald Firemane walk cycle test

Wanted to force myself to practice making a full walk cycle at a target resolution before a gamejam I thought would look best as a compromise of high detail + lowres retro (aimed for 24x24 tiles with character about 2 tiles high) + 12 colors

Happy with the results though spotting some errors I should fix but gamejam starting now. Definitely too long to cram in a 1 week gamejam (4h45; 8 frames + quick blink frame) but happy with the result and it gives me a measuring stick for next time and a timeframe to estimate animated commission pricing (10-15$ per frame probably unless I get more efficient)
