deadnaming discussion

i sure as fuck am lucky that my professor is so good it turns out one of the people im citing in my dissertation has transitioned since he published the book i read and i accidentally deadnamed him in my citation which wouldve been pretty fucking terrible. i looked him up and hes fine with people using his old name but still. now im worried everyone ive cited has turned out to be trans. is everyone trans

deadnaming discussion

@garfiald This is a kinda tough issue because they don’t include fliers in old books saying “The author’s name is actually this now.”

deadnaming discussion

@tibius i know and its not like this is an author i work on a lot but its still like. i got very lucky that my prof knew and that this author happens to be fine with both his names

deadnaming discussion

@garfiald yeah. I guess I am trying to imagine a permanent solution to this sticky problem and I’m not coming up with a good one.

deadnaming discussion

@garfiald Actually the solution would be for libraries to update copies of books. That’s the solution.

deadnaming discussion

@tibius @garfiald
I guess the problem would then be what to do if there were no editions published after the transition. Would the libraries mark the books manually?

deadnaming discussion

@sexybenfranklin @tibius i think it used to be common for slips of paper listing printing errata to be added to books after they'd been published

deadnaming discussion

@garfiald @sexybenfranklin @tibius Alternative way to think about it: lots of authors will publish their books under fictional names

deadnaming discussion

@mary @garfiald @sexybenfranklin Yup. You find Richard Bachman under K for Stephen King. And the archivist gives you this information. Should be no different for trans authors.
