With news of Unroll.me selling user inbox info to Uber, lots of people are repeating "if you're not paying for it, you're the product."
I've said before, and will continue to say, that that is the wrong formulation. Sometimes you pay for it and you're still the product – look at US ISPs. Sometimes you don't pay for it and you're not the product – free software.
The real question is whether a software or service empowers users, which can't be boiled down to whether you paid.
@theTJ i'm sorry :/ yeah, server choices can be really hard :o I like it on computerfairi.es, and at first glance, cybre.space seems nice as well. i've heard witches.town is also great, and i haven't checked them out more closely, but toot.cat and wandering.shop look promising to me

We want to decentralize stuff like this, and not everything has to be under Gargron.
It will be a great place to collect things like how to help out (with other stuff than code), who to contact.

How do people keep track of far right bigots/activists? One can document them on wikipedia, but that's limited. I wonder about setting up a custom wikidata install where people can document what these people say and do...
