Just updated @translator (translator@toot.works) with a new feature! It can now be used to translate existing statuses.
To translate a status, reply to it* with "@translator [language_code]". @translator should then reply with the translation.
* Probably want to set the visibility on this to "Direct"
* Make sure to use translator@toot.works as opposed to the @translator on your local instance
* List of language codes and additional instructions here: https://goo.gl/t8h2YS
I'm considering setting aside the compute resources to host some small salon-sized (say 16 user) instances to see how well they develop.
I would be willing to set up and host ~10 of these as an experiment, and would commit to both operating them for at least a year and to making them as easy to move as possible should a particular salon decide they'd prefer to self-host.
I would like to offer either postActiv or Mastodon servers for this at the salon's choice.
Would there be interest?
There's a Tusky update coming hopefully soon, mostly to address missing features including direct messages, profile editing, a mute list, and follow requests. Also, a BUNCH of new translations.
Right now I'm talking with F-Droid to see if I can get the app back in their store, and working on the follow requests, but everything else is checked off.
One space and one "with" too much in such an important toot. I must truly go and curl up in my bed and sleep, a lot, until i stop sleeping
Also the emoji one π© looks a lot like lion

I thought about ππ because accuracy, but I decided that queer coding was more important.

the framing I've been using is conversation privacy vs data privacy. way different threat models, one is "I don't want to deal with ppl/this is between us" and the other is "this data shouldn't be read except by you"
the latter is very often overkill and way higher activation energy
going from your raucous pub voice to a gently whispered aside into someone's ear, instead of encoding it on their napkin and leaving it under the spare soap in the bathroom
this is the difference between taking your conversation to your bedroom from the living room, versus communicating via deaddrop
