@eri tectoy bypassed the market protectionism which prohibited import of electronics by making a deal with sega of japan directly to allow them to manufacture the console right in brazil, proving the market demand a couple years earlier with the zillion toy gun

@eri the import ban produced several unlicensed clones, such as gradiente's phantom system (NES), microdigital's TK series (sinclair computers and apple II) etc

it wasn't prohibitively expensive, it was prohibited at all because the military dictatorship at the time (until 1985) wanted brazil to fend for itself and make its own electronics rather than import them (it didn't work)
