getting kinda tired of people complaining that we "used to have" forums and blogs and a non-corporate internet because there's literally nothing stopping you from still being in that internet that never really went away it just got pushed out of the spotlight but nobody wants to join my shitty forums and shitty irc channels and everyone wants to suck daddy discord's nitro dick and i think making "the internet" a boogeyman scapegoat for your own consumption choices is rancid

@mavica_again
I don't think (most of) the complaining people are disingenuous and secretly prefer discord over IRC or phpBB - the problem is that the people who don't complain are the vast majority and seem to prefer corporate garbage, so the critical mass needed for IRC chans or custom forums or whatever to work/be "alive" just isn't there anymore

@Doomed_Daniel i agree that people simply refuse to move and i condemn that people as being part of the problem

@Doomed_Daniel i've hosted a forum since 6 years ago and founded this mastodon instance 7 years ago, i'm trying to be part of the change and i think people who want to be serious about the internet should follow suit

@mavica_again
I've been using Mastodon since 2017, I think, but as you remember back then it was just a handful of nerds, and most people would disappear again after a few weeks, probably because it was so empty and they were bored.
It only started becoming more lively once Twitter fucked up so badly that more people who don't care all that much if the platform they're using is corporate or not started moving..

@mavica_again
So for people to abandon Discord it would first have to bought by Elon Musk or some other Nazi who enforces corresponding moderation (or non-moderation)

@mavica_again
and so is twitter, but this kind of shit at least manage to drive a significant amount of users away to give (hopefully open) alternatives a chance
