@thetacola gnu (formerly general) image manipulation program was originally named for the pulp fiction character "the gimp" who is named after the gimp suit they wear which is a bdsm accoutrement named after a slur aimed at physically disabled people
you can corroborate any of this through your own research
@thetacola and in case you think there is no possible linkage between gnu image manipulation program and bdsm (which i am fine and in favour of, just not the slur) this is the splash screen for version 2.7.2
@mavica_again @thetacola oh... Oh now that would be a very awkward pop up while running Linux at work.
@Stinkie they defend this one by saying "oh it was just an unstable development release, not meant to be seen if you're on the stable channel" but like, isn't that the point of rolling releases vs "archaic" distros like Debian?
@mavica_again that very well could have been on my work's Linux systems back in like 2010, or whenever that came out, since they ran Red Hat at the time.
@mavica_again @thetacola Ironically, that was painted by a woman.
@thetacola @mavica_again it's a slur against someone who has trouble walking and also slang for someone wearing a bondage suit, which is how it ended up in Pulp Fiction
@mavica_again @mym thanks yall for letting me know :)
@mavica_again @mym hey quick question, what other meaning does the word gimp have? it solely means the art program in my dialect of english, and searching the word up simply returns a bunch of pages on the art program
