the discord loading screen factoid "in the ancient days discord was a browser-only app" is hilarious to me because in 2025 it didn't stop being a browser-only app they just started shipping the browser
@clyde @mavica_again apparently a lot of desktop apps are chromium under hood
@4bz @mavica_again this might be why a lot of desktop apps are so painful 😔
@mavica_again It's 2025. Your spreadsheet is a browser. Your chat is a browser. Your banking app is a browser. Your ticket tool is a browser. Your live streaming app is a browser.
Your actual browser is not involved on this.
@mavica_again they still keep the “bring your own web browser” running too, i’ve used it when i first got into discord and am still using it to this day, it just makes more sense to me that way and also discord can’t spy on my process list
@mavica_again all of those factoids make me so mad. "Did you know that in the olden times our mascot had a silly name? RAWR XD" and "if you click around in our 10 million inconstantly implemented UI dead-ends, you might find a secret!"
@mavica_again for a while I've had this (wildly speculative) suspicion that all the desktop apps that are secretly browsers are sharing some key DLLs and causing a file access bottleneck when a computer that should normally be really fast starts lagging out on all electron apps and the browser simultaneously
