Let's explore a massive MFM hard drive designed for the first Macintosh... and see if my dongle has what it takes to make it work!

IT FREAKIN' WORKS! 🎉

Here's a 30 sec clip of when it sprang to life:

Here's HOW I got it working & how I backed up ALL the data from it:

This was NO small task. Huge thanks to EVERYONE who helped me get here! ❤️🤗 What a journey...

@mac84tv now I'm wondering if it'll run on a Lisa running MacWorks XL

@DosFox @mac84tv Please try it! My guess is it won’t work since it uses the external clock pin. I couldn’t get the ThunderScan working because it too relies on this pin. AFAIK it’s not broken out on the Lisa.

@paulrickards @DosFox The blasted thing apparently only likes the Mac 128K and 512K. I'll try on my 512Ke, but apparently the company didn't really support the Mac Plus, according to very old posts I've found.

@mac84tv @paulrickards I wonder if it'll like the Unitron 1024 ROMs - they're effectively 64k ROMs that have been bastardised to use 1mb of ram.

Drop them in your Plus and see 😅.

@DosFox @paulrickards Oh my, tell me the story of how you found these ROMs, super cool!

I did a video ages ago that talked about Unitron and I always thought it would be fun to inspect the ROMs to see how much was just copied Apple code. Neat!! 🎉

@mac84tv

They were found by @mavica_again !

I can confirm that they work in a Macintosh Plus as well - I built an entire Macintosh Plus Clone around the ROMs

@DosFox @mavica_again Oh wow, that's super cool. I must have missed that, thanks so much for sharing! :apple_inc:

@mac84tv @DosFox i found the files in disk backups available on the downloads here: velasco.com.br/item/unitronmac

according to a source, these were very moldy disks rescued from an abandoned office and a lot of data is corrupted, this was well before flux imaging and the disks are long gone

Follow

@mac84tv @DosFox i was reluctant to share where i found them initially because a lot of the disks seem to have been overwritten by family of the workers with personal data
