part of it for me is that I've had to deal with a wide variety of stalkers, so I've learned to shut up and hide.
as for everyone else, I think the internet slowly turned into another platform for parasocialization. it stopped being a place to talk to hang out with friends and became a place where you're an audience for celebrities.
