Anyone with a amazon #kindle paperwhite 3 (2015, 7th Gen) who would be interested in installing #Linux 6.15 and getting rid of nearly all the Amazon bits?
I'm now looking for brave alpha testers to dig out their old kindle and test installation scripts (there is a chance of bricking which could be rescued by tapping the serial lines)

can this be reverted to stock? (i don't have an Amazon account and all my books are downloaded from elsewhere, just need to retain the functionality of reading books)
@mavica_again not yet implemented a backup system. The current installation overwrites the kernel but we should be able to backup it up and rewrite it, just need to identify where the kernel sits in the memory (I know where it starts, need to work out where it ends).
So not yet but will be possible
@smallsolar i dug it out and it's a dp75sdi which seems to be the exact model you need!
i'm interested in trying if there's any way i can image/back up what's already there, not squeamish at all to crack it open and prod at serial lines

Just for reference;
p1 - this is the kindle's OS
p2 - 64Mb that isn't really used
p3 - 64Mb that isn't really used
p4 - Main drive with books (vfat)
Thinking it through:
1. We could backup the whole of the 'boot' section (1st 32mb of mmcblk0) to a file on p4 (the main drive where your books are).
2. The current script installs the custom linux to p2 which isn't really used (its only 64mb but we can fit in enough there at least for experimenting with)
3. If you wanted to go back, you''d boot into the custom linux, you'd dd the boot section back in place and it should be back to normal.
I'd obviously recommend also backing it all up manually to another place (e.g. your laptop).
