"The Matrix" is at its best when it approximates the feel of a horror movie, and at its weakest when it goes for pure action. The sequels are almost all action, and therefore less interesting.

@mona Action sells more tickets, so you can''t really blame them for going that direction in the sequels.

@skquinn I suppose not? The difficulty is that the Wachowskis end up trying to top their first film's action set-pieces with even more outre ones, and so you end up with rather silly stuff like the first fight between multiple Smiths and Neo in "Reloaded" and the ending fight between Neo and Smith in "Revolutions" that seems to go on for about 45 minutes.
