@alyx@icosahedron.website @pnathan Hence neither of us has entirely succeeded in getting used to an environment that, by self-selection, seems to favor chiefly people who like endless tinkering and fussing over tools. We'd rather get stuff done quickly and with a minimum of fuss; Alyx's favorite programming experience was with HyperCard.

@pnathan @alyx@icosahedron.website I should perhaps interject that Alyx (and myself, since we are basically two aspects of one personality) are not computer people by training or temperament. Our education is in the physical sciences (chiefly chemistry) and in the liberal arts (I am a classicist, among other things, with a B.A. in the subject) but we feel driven to learn more of computer programming for creative reasons.

@alyx@icosahedron.website @pnathan I think you will have to prepare to be more open-minded on this, Alyx.

@lifning @nire @Elizafox *gives you a Pearl Point for the "Citizen Kane" reference*

@Sargoth Yes. This is English, which means we have choices.

@kara_dreamer @bonhomme You know my argument for using "magick": it's valuable disambiguation, considering how many other uses there are for "magic".

@Sargoth Would not the plural of "bepis" be "bepes", or possibly "bepeis"?

guns, shootings

@mawr @Aradia@mastodon.social Holy heck Mawr! *offers hug*

@Elizafox Hrm, I've never found the Bond films to be all that memorable, but it's hardly surprising; the same device is used in Hitchcock's "North by Northwest" and no doubt many other films.

@imthebatmax Never too old to make your sleep a bit more enjoyable! I'm 42 and sleep with stuffed animals

@tellio @paulfree14 I am quite the fan of myself. My metamour (that is to say, my girlfriend's other partner) has collected a number of surprisingly good but _cheap_ pens mostly purchased online, and he gave me one that's now my favorite writing instrument. I used to affect a Mont Blanc because I had a Classics professor who carried one, but I damaged it and never replaced it.

#fediversefriday I am a sheep farmer and a uni composition teacher here in the cave and karst country of south-central Kentucky. I am reminded every day of that living, breathing beast underfoot. I worry less about the indifference of nature than I do about indifference of humanity to nature. I get great vibes from #mastodon and compared to the birdsite, it is a new Eden. I love haptic stuff like #fountainpens and #calligraphy as well as #opensource genius I see every day here. @paulfree14

I have learned that sodium can be precipitated practically quantitatively as the mixed sodium-caesium hismuthinitrite (hexanitritobismuthate(III)) while potassium remains dissolved. hm...

I'm wondering if _Acidithiobacillus_ could be cultured and kept for use in oxidising pyrite to iron sulphates for the purpose of manufacturing oleum by the old "Nordhausen" method. That depended on slow air-oxidation but perhaps a culture of sulphur-loving bacteria could speed things along.

@Elizafox I detest the man and am not surprised at this lapse.
