I use mastodon in a weirdly performative way, as in I don't see the point of writing anything that I don't think will interest anyone else.

@BatElite it is still social media so yeah, we are essentially creating media to entertain one another and most media is performative. Does it bother you, do you think?

@nyanuri Not really, but I haven't seen social media describe itself that way. For example, the prompt when you haven't written anything is "What's on your mind?" when for me that would more often than not be inanity.

@BatElite so maybe social media is kind of a merger between the two? Like "whats on your mind"/how do you wanna say it for performance value? I do think that social media privileges the especially literate for that reason. an especially literate person, for example could excel at performative inanity and still get lots of like and retoots. Is that what shit posting is?

@nyanuri It seems so. I'm fairly certain I've seen some people who do shitpost say that what they're doing is dumb and/or pointless, although if it entertains others I'd disagree with the latter at least. Anything that's a dumb (in-)joke seems to fall under shitposting as well.
