Spotify Wrapped Is Everything Wrong With The Modern Music Industry
A rant about streaming services, algorithms, being overwhelmed by choice, and the depersonalization of a deeply personal artform; and, why we should care.
Something that's become clear to me over the last decade is that the systems we have in place - "Justice", NLRB, FDA/EPA, even democracy itself - are all mediating tools created by an imperial ruling class to insulate themselves from the immediate consequences of their own decisions and actions.
It's also become clearer and clearer that our current ruling class didn't get the memo; they don't understand the purpose of these institutions isn't to *restrict* them; it's to *protect* them.
I know what you’re thinking. “I have too many friends! What am I to do this season of joy and wonder?! I tried slapping them last year and they didn’t like it!”
Fear not! You need no longer slap your friends in the face to show them you care. Instead, offer… (dramatic pause)

https://www.thenation.com/article/society/medical-bills-trauma/ there is an unbelievably immense reservoir of anger, trauma, and despair that the US for-profit healthcare system created and bears full moral responsibility for. the people running it still don't understand that, and they have no idea what it will be like once the dam breaks.
@RenewedRebecca (also, of course, most of the conventional metrics are bad. a forest gets cut down, a stock price goes up, and that is "efficient" by the logic of business. so even when they are doing well by their own narrow standards they are often harming the world they depend on to exist. "run it like a business" is defective thinking in multiple very important ways.)
@RenewedRebecca also, for every business that is "efficient" by the conventional metrics, there are dozens that are staggeringly inefficient and full of warped incentives. the biggest ones are effectively undemocratic little kingdoms that are constantly blowing money on the whims of their kings. the kingdom of facebook has burned billions each year trying to turn VR into critical internet infrastructure, something that doesn't even make sense and no one actually wants.
@hikari the uninvention of the computer upsets me so immensely
because not only are we living in a world designed around people not having a computer, we even live in a world where the computer computer user has their agency removed and gets forced to own a smartphone.
My bank does not offer authentication methods that work without an app anymore, forcing you to have at least one device with an arbitrarily "new" enough Android or iOS version to warrant having their authenticator app working

Because irony is dead, a Dutch tulip farmer is heating their greenhouse with Bitcoin mining: The servers in turn are powered by solar energy from the roof, reducing the normally huge electricity costs for mining, and cutting its...
