“Trillions of Java objects are created every day,” (JEP 401)

The way computer security works in 2026:

  1. queers go to congress and demonstrate multiple serious exploits against actual security software. the maintainers deny there’s a problem. nobody pays attention except other queers at congress

  2. OpenAI finds a bug which could, hypothetically, in a very difficult-to-orchestrate attack and in the absence of already-existing mitigations, have a security implication. the entire industry has an overnight meltdown. coverage on national news stations. meanwhile, nobody is provably able to actually make it work as an exploit

I myself have invented Lua at least twice. And I'd do it again

the so-called 'dark ages' weren't a period when nothing happened, but instead a period from which few writings survived due to the lack of preservation, destruction, or simple lack of literacy to record what did happen.

We used to call residential proxies (software that runs unexpectedly on a random person's device and relays someone else's internet traffic to hide its origin or get around network-based restrictions) "malware," and an application which appeared to be legit but did something like this behind the scenes was called a "Trojan horse"...until someone realized they could bury it in an app's terms of service and do it "legally."

and to make it more explicitly political, attribution is one of the most basic ways we can acknowledge that our labor connects us to one another. all the essentials and conveniences we enjoy come from someone and we should name them, respect them, and compensate them in gratitude. the removal of attribution is closely connected to, is a means of, the exploitation of labor. capital's ideal docile subject gets treats from heaven and neither knows nor cares where they come from.

attribution is a bedrock social concept for me. it's a major way we navigate the world, discover new things, develop taste, interact with one another in a positive way. even in a fully post-capitalist world it would still be important.
what's that band you're listening to? who drew that art on your t-shirt? that sandwich looks good, where's it from? that's clever, who said that? i trust [person's] opinions on [subject]. etc.
anything that removes or muddies attribution is socially corrosive.
