The reason why confidence in science fell was because of:
- misreporting by newspapers -- they misreported because it was profitable to do so (Controversial headlines sell more papers -- See how Nature published a paper stating ESP was real, but not the followup paper that found it wasn't replicable!).
- misreporting by the university's PR department -- again, because it was profitable to the university (They need good news to show their sponsors, to show they aren't wasting resources, and to draw more people into the university as students).
- inability of slower, steadier, and more iterative scientific research to get grants -- again this is because stating "I want to do this thing that someone else did but just to double check" is not profitable for a university from a PR standpoint
