the learning curve is a little steep and the preview rendering performance is horrifyingly bad, but oh my god, why have i never used blender for video editing before. it's frame-precise, i can composite all the stuff i want, and it has keyframe-based animation. in an open-source package i'm already somewhat familiar with!!
So I'm sitting here trying to figure out how to tell if a particular app is running in Wayland or XWayland.
This is the answer I get off Stack Overflow. I'm thinking… No. No, that's too silly. It can't be the best way.
I keep researching. It's the best way.
You run xeyes.
Wayland has security that keeps windows from knowing about mouse events in other windows. XWayland doesn't.
Xeyes will track your cursor whenever you're over an XWayland window, then stop if you pass over anything else.
Well it had to happen eventually. #Scripps is retiring FLIP (FLoating Instrument Platform). This is an amazing piece of engineering (and soooo weird on the inside - everything pivots, so walls become floors). The #ship to be towed out to a location, and it would literally flip, sinking most of the ship directly down to give a *very stable platform for #oceanography research. Launched in 1962.

The English language is a wonderful thing, and we know some rules without knowing we know them.
‘Have you ever heard that patter-pitter of tiny feet? Or the dong-ding of a bell? Or hop-hip music? That’s because, when you repeat a word with a different vowel, the order is always I A O. Bish bash bosh. So politicians may flip-flop, but they can never flop-flip. It’s tit-for-tat, never tat-for-tit. This is called ablaut reduplication, and if you do things any other way, they sound very, very odd indeed.’ From ‘The Elements of Eloquence’ by Mark Forsyth.
Just think, there are professional programmers these days, even ones using C/C++, who don't have to know what a calling convention even is!
Think of them, and envy them.
oh shit lmao i just popped open the harvest moon ds cute rom in a filebrowser tool, and uhhhhh, they shipped this game with a file named 'Desktop_.ini' in every folder, which has the text '2007-6-25' in it.
according to google, this file is dropped by a bit of malware called 'Fujacks' (see: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/threats/malware-encyclopedia-description?Name=Virus%3AWin32%2FFujacks.D ), meaning that whoever built the rom that they shipped did it on a computer infected with this virus.
Over the last several days Stefan Torto has posted on YouTube multiple videos in which he is playing synthesizers on this table, with the camera on the exact same position and the cat in his lap. From this I conclude that sometime three or four days ago Stefan's cat sat in his lap and he has been sitting in that chair the entire time since then, unwilling to dislodge the cat to stand up, with nothing to do except create electronic music with the handful of synthesizers that happen to be in reach

LB: why do I get the feeling that there's probably a bunch of companies needlessly redownloading the same 100 - 1000 packages they need over and over again as part of some automated 'continuous integration' pipeline that runs 100s of times per day.
