yeah it seems the OEM of this terrible windows machine has somehow fucked it up so that the USB driver doesn't load when you're in the recovery environment.

and it's a tablet. guess what bus they used to connect the touch screen? THAT'S RIGHT, USB!

this is on top of them shipping a windows 8.1 tablet with a 16gb SSD.
and partitioning it with a 5gb recovery partition.

fun fact: this means that once you install all the windows 8.1 updates, you'll have about negative 400 megabytes free!

gah. searching for help with windows problems is so useless. At least when you google linux problems you find something like answers, or nothing.

you google a windows problem like "I try to reboot into the startup command prompt but it hangs/doesn't accept input at the select-user screen" and get answers like "go into IE and clear your cookies"

Hmm I swear I once read about a compression algorithm (~9 years ago) that was general purpose but also contained a special case for chess notation

I can't find anything on this. I don't think it's a figment of my imagination? My thought at the time was “huh that's a weird feature to include” but I didn't look into it more and I still find it curious.
