@RenewedRebecca (also, of course, most of the conventional metrics are bad. a forest gets cut down, a stock price goes up, and that is "efficient" by the logic of business. so even when they are doing well by their own narrow standards they are often harming the world they depend on to exist. "run it like a business" is defective thinking in multiple very important ways.)

@RenewedRebecca also, for every business that is "efficient" by the conventional metrics, there are dozens that are staggeringly inefficient and full of warped incentives. the biggest ones are effectively undemocratic little kingdoms that are constantly blowing money on the whims of their kings. the kingdom of facebook has burned billions each year trying to turn VR into critical internet infrastructure, something that doesn't even make sense and no one actually wants.

My bank does not offer authentication methods that work without an app anymore, forcing you to have at least one device with an arbitrarily "new" enough Android or iOS version to warrant having their authenticator app working

We took like FORTY-FIVE MINUTES TO BEGIN TAXIING. This is objectively not so long and probably would not have seemed like so long, but it had already taken me seven hours to get from where I was staying to the point of sitting on the plane, so it felt like a long time.
