Finally my blog generator is spitting out a blog index and posts, all that's left is writing up a post, do some final polishing and publishing it.

Out of context random YT comment:

As an IT engineer I am pretty worried by the increasing reliance on software and apps for the most basic of functions like payments. The complexity of something should be inversely proportional to its criticality

I agree

me: Maybe we should get a pizza stone.
Alex: 'Pizza stone' sounds like something fake.
me: ...
Alex: Like...was it forged by elves? To bring the ways of pizza to the Men of Númenor at the end of the First Age?

@TechConnectify People in my line of work love "reinventing wheels", no matter how many times we tell ourselves for doing so.

Here's a relevant blogpost: baldurbjarnason.com/2023/debat

And, to reiterate my thoughts, I think plug-and-charge is neat. I even kinda-sorta use it with EVgo.

But good gravy nobody would care about it if card payments just /worked/ like they do /literally everywhere but car chargers for some inexplicable reason/

yeah it seems the OEM of this terrible windows machine has somehow fucked it up so that the USB driver doesn't load when you're in the recovery environment.

and it's a tablet. guess what bus they used to connect the touch screen? THAT'S RIGHT, USB!

this is on top of them shipping a windows 8.1 tablet with a 16gb SSD.
and partitioning it with a 5gb recovery partition.

fun fact: this means that once you install all the windows 8.1 updates, you'll have about negative 400 megabytes free!

gah. searching for help with windows problems is so useless. At least when you google linux problems you find something like answers, or nothing.

you google a windows problem like "I try to reboot into the startup command prompt but it hangs/doesn't accept input at the select-user screen" and get answers like "go into IE and clear your cookies"

"How did you find out you were trans?"

"The usual way. When I was still an egg I told a fae my deadname and they got really mad when it had no power over me."

me: “lots of places promise shipping as fast as two days now”

me from ten years ago: “oh, that’s cool! how do they do that? do they use drones?!”

me: “no, actually. as far as I can tell, they just openly lie, then say it was delayed after two days”

Hmm I swear I once read about a compression algorithm (~9 years ago) that was general purpose but also contained a special case for chess notation

I can't find anything on this. I don't think it's a figment of my imagination? My thought at the time was “huh that's a weird feature to include” but I didn't look into it more and I still find it curious.

The world would be so much better if we replaced every instance of 'euro' with 'yuri'. Eurorack modular synthesis? No, yurirack! The modules are lesbians. Yankee planning a trip to Europe? Not without a lesbian awakening! Paying for something with coins and bills? Nope, we trade sapphic manga now!

Uh, let's see, first there's an introductory greeting from the company that I'm supposed to read. Uh, it's kind of a legal thing, you know. Um, "Welcome to Fedi Fazbear's Federation. A magical place for furries and grown-ups alike, where fantasy and fun come to life." Gargon Entertainment is not responsible for damage to property or person. Upon discovering that damage or death has occurred, a missing person report will be filed within 90 days, or as soon property and premises have been thoroughly cleaned and bleached, and the carpets have been replaced.
