@sasha "simple" is only available as source code and requires tons of extremely obscure libraries no distro packages

"kowabunga" is made by some big tech company to try and appear relatable and cool

"birmingham" is made by someone who didn't know what to name their software so they just picked the name of the place they live in

"piss" is some program started as a joke by a bunch of teenagers 20 years ago, but now it's used by every massive corporation in the world

"greg's shell script" is the only reason why modern linux even works

linux software names:

  • Simple
  • Kowabunga
  • Birmingham
  • PISS (PISS Is Super Special)
  • greg’s shell script
@Daojoan Exactly like Zoom who want their workers in the office because remote working doesn't work. While they create software to facilitate remote working...

Roblox wants your kids to spend as much time as possible in their virtual world but they're anti-remote working because “physical spaces are better”

obviously that was a shitpost. the real reason is that low-level programmers try to make code run fast. you know who also runs fast? that's right, kanbaru suruga. (refuses to elaborate)

“Devs gaining little (if anything) from AI coding assistants | CIO”

cio.com/article/3540579/devs-g

> Many developers say AI coding assistants make them more productive, but a recent study set forth to measure their output and found no significant gains. Use of GitHub Copilot also introduced 41% more bugs, according to the study from Uplevel, a company providing insights from coding and collaboration data.

Like I've been saying for a while, feeling productive is not the same as being productive

What is a project but a deployable pile of regrets

I can FINALLY announce the news! I have been awarded a British Academy small grant!!

This work will be on safeguarding knowledge about floppy disks! The project will include working with @dpc_chat @JennyMitcham @anj on gathering floppy disk information in one place. But will also include interviewing floppy disk experts across communities and cleaning floppy disks with different techniques with the conservation department at the Cambridge University Library!!

Update on MTN / Seeburg Background Music Player

Up & running. DC Motor, so the Speed is right for either 50 or 60 Hz. Was expecting faff, but clearly designed to be sold in multiple territories

No, I’m not taking the Cartridge apart, in case I can’t get it back together. Once I know what’s what, I will. Cause I know you lot will want a peep

@obsoletemediauk

If I knew how to design a layout engine that wouldn't become a giant pile of HTML+CSS like cruft I'd honestly do it myself. I know how to make a bytecode VM with JIT that handles rendering, audio, video, networking, and input, because that's what game engines are

Show thread

Anyway at this point if you ask me browsers are just VMs with a layout engine except done in the absolute worst way possible

Show thread

Feel like if we ever want to break the browser hegemony we need a reboot of web technology to start clean with a design that's actually feasible to implement from scratch without spending billions of dollars

nobody will remember:
- your salary
- how busy you were
- how many hours you worked

people will remember:
- when you stepped up to help strangers
- the times you destroyed power plants
- your giant sword

I can't describe the feeling of being abroad and watching Israeli airstrikes hit your city over and over again and you're checking on the group chats with people reacting seconds later while also trying to understand what's happening because explaining it is part of your job. #Beirut #Lebanon

God I love programming! It's like the world's most open ended puzzle game, and it's an incredibly well designed puzzle game, with all kinds of difficulty modes (programming languages) depending on what kind of challenge the player wants!

YT videos be like "I made an angle grinder jig for rapidly chopping cucumbers using nothing but plywood and CA glue"
