@avon_deer @Nuggette@furry.energy I applied for my postal vote when I was working nights all the time so it made sense to do it in my own time rather than have to go to the polling place, but I haven’t got around to changing it back yet.
@avon_deer @renbymon @Nuggette seems to transcend age over here. It's a way to avoid COVID, it opens up the time/ease of handling it, doesn't require physically going to a place (which may cost money - that some folks may or may not have, or do have but can't spare. Or time. Are all employers over there required to allow employees the needed time off work to go vote?-because that's certainly not the case here lol.)
@avon_deer @colinstu @renbymon @Nuggette For over a month, I can go to any city hall anywhere in Norway, in addition to several other public locations, and cast my vote. The county I am in has 3 different locations to vote, but I am not limited to my county, any voting location will do.
They open early and are open long, they are open saturdays, whatnot. Only at the actual election day do I need to vote in a "designated location"
In addition they offer "vote at home" for those that are still not able to get to the pre-vote location. They will bring the voting booth to your home and make sure that no one pressures you when you vote.
Avon is correct to be sceptical. Mail in voting is anything but optimal. There is zero chance to check that a vote was cast without influence, and this is a direct democratic threat. And as we see here, it is quite possible to avoid it...
@lettosprey @avon_deer @renbymon @Nuggette I'm not suggesting mail in voting is the only tool (or the most optimal), just one of many to help prevent disenfranchisement. A lot more needs to be done of course.
@colinstu @avon_deer @renbymon @Nuggette Not really. Due to the major flaw in mail in voting, it is a tool that should not be part of a democratic process.
You HAVE to be able to make sure a person cast a vote without any pressure. You do not have this with mail in voting.
For that reason, mail in voting should not be part of the solution.
@renbymon @Nuggette Not scolding. Its hugely better that people actually vote. I am just perplexed by the spread of this phenomenon. It does seem to be a young-person thing especially.
