while we have secure copies of all our digital collections – both born-digital and digitised content, and the metadata that describes it – we have been hampered by the lack of viable infrastructure on which to restore it.
Right off the bat we're about to see a difference between what happens in a major enterprise and a cultural institution with limited means. They simply did not have the capacity to recover, given that they did not pay the ransom and systems remained encrypted.

And you might think "Oh just reimage all of them." I cannot stress enough to you how undersized library and museum IT staffs always are.

To Recap

The British Library:

- used unsupported, unpatched software as critical infra
- used multiple IT vendors with varying levels of access
- lacked sufficient in-house staff to coordinate a proper security policy
- lacked resources (or leadership, probably) to appropriately fund an infrastructure refresh program
- launched remote access during COVID
WITHOUT MFA

And although we cannot say for sure that the Terminal Server was the point of access, it's a good dang bet. Rhysida works smarter, not harder.

As usual, the reality of defense is not sexy malware research. It's not breathlessly shouting about patching 0-days. It's the quotidian work of getting the basics right, not taking shortcuts, and making security—across the CIA triad—a budget priority.

In cultural and educational institutions, it is very common to think of IT systems as an afterthought, or ancillary to the primary mission. These institutions maintain this mentality at their own considerable risk. This extends to the governments and organizations who fund these institutions.

LB: I’m three quarters of the way through that experiment and what I’ve learned is that I can understand almost everything except for gruff whispers and soft voices.

M8 the NHS is such an inherently powerful public good that the Tories have been actively trying to destroy it for decades and still have to do it by the back door while pretending they also think it's great

Looks like it's official - Akira Toriyama, world-famous manga artist, passed away on March 1. The website is failing under load, so here's a copy of the letter.

Lots of hype around Web 3.0.

When does Web 3.1 come out? What about Web 3.11 For Workgroups?

I realized that I never uploaded this, and that needs to be fixed. Here's my Birdo PNGTuber form ~

• I have my own telegram art channel! (18+) t.me/TrevorFoxArt
• Comm form and other places to find me: linktr.ee/Trevor_Fox

Today's pro-tip:

If you have to do a Google search, use “before:2023" at the beginning of your search string. You get a completely different (and IMO much more usable) set of results.

The web has died.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it here but I'm a HUGE fan of a villain character called "The Dark Knight" (pictured below) from an old BBC kids show "Incredible Games"

I've wanted to have a cosplay of this since I was a kid, and this year I should FINALLY be able to do this!

I commissioned someone to make the cloak and another to 3D model the helmet, which has been 3D printed and just needs putting together. 1/3

Another suit being sent out soon.
Had to get some shots in while we had a rare showing of sun here in Vancouver! I think the cooler colours of this suit look great against the warm sunny backdrop.
