I'm sorry; I can't stop laughing.

Apparently at least 6 big companies won't insure Tesla's $80k+ Cybertruck in some states. Partly because they're so incredibly expensive to repair, and partially because parts are only available directly from Tesla and they're very expensive. Plus the liability of a vehicle that is marketed as being rigid so as to protect the passengers - the part not said out loud is that it does so at the expense of the people in the other vehicle.

In those states the only viable insurance is from Tesla. That's right, Tesla. Otherwise, they can't be driven & they can't be sold. Which might not be so bad except Tesla's policy is expensive and Tesla gets real time constant surveillance of driving habits AND ADJUST RATES ACCORDINGLY.

Also? The states where nobody will insure the Cybertruck & the 12 states where Tesla is licensed to sell insurance ARE NOT THE SAME STATES. NY, for instance.

I can't see why Cybertruck owners would complain though; it seems like a Libertarian dream to me!

My entry to Assembly Summer fast graphics, which unfortunately didn't qualify this year.

reminder that the IOC used to do chromosomal testing and dropped it when they realized just how many female athletes they'd have to start excluding

the IOC sucks in tons of ways, but they care about the bottom line and they know that if they start banning female athletes based just on having a Y chromosome, the Olympics are gonna take a much bigger hit than all the casuals think

This is fascinating. There were trans and intersex athletes competing at the Olympics in the early years, but everything changed during/after the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany, when the Nazis decided to go after Zdeněk Koubek, a trans man competing for Czechoslovakia

olympics, pol, double-standards

The thing that fucking drives me mad about the Imane Khelif debacle is that this hasn't been an issue in mens sports before.

Mike Tyson routinely knocked people out in the first round and was still allowed to compete.
Michael Phelps has "the perfect body for swimming" and was still allowed to compete.

It only seems to be non-western women who are suddenly a danger to the sport.

I'm vehemently of the belief that you should never have to book a train ticket to be able to travel affordably. Buy a ticket, sure. But book? No. Book implies planning, implies non immediate future. And quite simply to have the ability to do that is a massive luxury that many people do not have. And by requiring people to do so we fail large sections of society, often in their time of greatest need.

A group in the UK that I'm hugely interested in are Library Of Things.

At a very basic level, they offer products such as power tools for rental rather than ownership.

But it's a little bit more than that:

They have a very clear vision, which is centred around *everybody* in a neighbourhood having access to quality tools, toys and technologies, reducing waste, and also *repairing* tools rather than landfilling them and buying new ones.

On top of that: they run workshops on how to use the tools etc; this is not a profit-driven venture.

I don't think they're on Mastodon, so I'm going to take this opportunity, given everything I've been talking about this morning, to give them a little shout-out.

If you're in a position to promote them, that would be great.

Once again in case it's not clear yet:

The policing of gender and how it is performed in society has nothing to do with "protecting women" and has everything to do with upholding white supremacy and its narrow definitions of what are acceptable ways of being.

Not by coincidence cis women of colour are the ones who are misgendered, discriminated and publicly humiliated when they over achieve and dare to be different to what the patriarchal white norm expects from "the weaker sex".

I will remind the world yet again: the Luddites were a labor movement, concerned with workers' safety and lifestyle, they were not anti technology.

They are the literal heroes of that story.

Only Amiga makes #FanartFirst possible!  This one is for the owner of my Mastodon instance, @Violet .

"Keeping VLC free and without ads is a no-brainer. I know people focus a lot on that part but, for me, it’s just the way it should be and it’s not difficult for me to keep it like that... Sure, more money would be fun, but most of the people I know who have more money are annoying." -- Jean-Baptiste Kempf

BMA press release on Cass Review on puberty blocker ban in the UK; positive news; references UKPol

Wasn't quite expecting this from the BMA (British Medical Association), but they have come out fighting against the Cass Review :TransHeart:

bma.org.uk/bma-media-centre/bm

Here are some highlights for those who don't want to follow the link:

Members of the BMA's Council recently voted in favour of a motion which asked the Association to 'publicly critique the Cass Review', after doctors and academics in several countries, including the UK, voiced concern about weaknesses in the methodologies used in the Review and problems arising from the implementation of some of the recommendations.

This is followed by:

The BMA is calling for a pause to the implementation of the Cass Review's recommendations whilst the task and finish group carries out its work. It is expected to be completed towards the end of this year. In the meantime, the BMA believes transgender and gender-diverse patients should continue to receive specialist healthcare, regardless of their age.

And then by:

The BMA has been critical of proposals to ban the prescribing of puberty blockers to children and young people with gender dysphoria, calling instead for more research to help form a solid evidence base for children's care – not just in gender dysphoria but more widely in paediatric treatments. The Association believes clinicians, patients and families should make decisions about treatment on the best available evidence, not politicians.

This feels like a real middle finger up to Wes Streeting🖕 who recently proposed making the ban permanent as the new UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

Glad to have friends who responded to me letting them know on Saturday I was mildly ill with "...unless... *what if it's finally happening?*" in relation to getting yinglet TF'd. No further clarification necessary on what was meant, they know how bad I want it
