A disaster occurs.
Some self-identified "preppers" imagine everyone will immediately start fighting one another.
Meanwhile, in reality, I read about everyone doing things from evacuating to search & rescue with boats and helicopters; distributing supplies by foot and bicycle and mule; and surveying and communicating by satellite and drone and ham radio.
And I am reminded of Rebecca Solnit's 2009 "A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities That Arise in Disaster".
Okay, my interest in ham radio's utility is overriding my hesitation. I want to learn it, and I want to be able to help, AND I'm okay being part of the uncomfortable period of nudging toward inclusion.
Does anyone have recommendations for getting into ham radio as a non-male, younger-than-some, non-right-wing person?
I'm in the PNW in terms of clubs or classes, but broad educational resource recommendations are also welcome!
Normal authors: release book to the public early in the week, with much fanfare.

Poke me for a trade!
I've got some news about office environments. The absolute worst part for me was dealing with the rampant gossip and laziness. People would chat all day, accomplish next to nothing, and then pretend they were some kind of heroes for staying late. People walk around, take lunch or bathroom breaks, attend meetings, etc. Office or Home people will walk around. Stop writing stupid stories to promote back-to-office culture and risk everyoneβs health.
My slides for my #EuroBSDcon talk "Building a Modern Packet Radio Network using Open Software", an overview of what myself and others have been doing to support the UK Packet Radio Network, are available on the con system:
- Slide PDF: https://events.eurobsdcon.org/media/2024/submissions/VMBGCY/resources/EuroBSDCon_Packet_Radio_3vxgXs7.pdf
- event page https://events.eurobsdcon.org/2024/talk/VMBGCY/
The talk is available on the live stream feeds - I start at 3:21:50 or at the following direct link:

I hit most of my main talking points, but there is some stuff in my notes I missed. I had a blast and it was a great weekend of pragmatic, technical and interesting conversation! I'm open for chat and can talk about radios alllll day!
Got asked how they were made:
I built them using high-density EVA foam! The surface detail was laser-cut and then glued to the disc base. Afterward, I further detailed the coins using a dremel, primed and painted them.
Ended up getting a couple commissions again this month, one of them being another perma-suit thing...
Error/progress UX is perhaps the biggest regression in computer UX over the past few decades.
Then: exactly what's happening, detailed description of what went wrong sufficient to diagnose and fix the problem.
Now: fake percentage bar that moves asymptotically towards 100% while nothing happens, then "Something Went Wrongβ’"
fyi to linux users, the unofficial signal desktop flatpak doesnt use the freedesktop Secrets API no matter what you do and leaves your keys completely unencrypted
you can just dump .var/apps/org.signal.Signal and read everything stored
if you're concerned, you should probably use the native pakcage
