UK: β€œIt’s still illegal to rip a CD you legally own to MP3!”

Also UK: β€œHey, let’s exempt those AI guys from copyright law!”

Copyright run amok:

1. High-end hoity-toity electronics company sends a YouTube DIY'er one of its products to repair.

2. He repairs it on camera (and reveals how poorly it was made).

3. Company files a copyright complaint with YouTube and gets his video taken down.

Releasing a little tool I made for myself: cue2ccd, a commandline tool to convert BIN/CUE disc images into CloneCD images. I wrote this to help me load images onto my Rhea CD drive emulator for Saturn, since it doesn't support BIN/CUE and there aren't any cross-platform or open source tools to move between those formats. mistys-internet.website/blog/b

It's a day ending in y so once again I would like to remind everyone that I am so happy that I'm a Renamon! πŸ’œπŸ’›

bulk email in the 21st century

RE LB ( https://io.mwl.io/@mwl/113669601450183985 ):

further down the thread, Molly states:

newsletters are expensive to run because of mailsending, not because of hosting costs. ~70% of my cost is for bulk email.

just throwing it out into the void that this sounds silly because it is silly; bulk email sending is expensive because modern email is controlled by a cartel of the big players who bless or shun every other mail server on the planet. the paid mail sending services hoard previously blessed IP addresses and will throw you overboard at the slightest hint that you’ve displeased the cartel.

but if your audience happens to run their own mail servers you can run your own mail server and none of y’all have to give one whit what the cartel thinks about your practices. just saying.

UK people - the government is running a "Copyright and Artificial Intelligence" open consultation, gov.uk/government/consultation until 2025-02-25

Option 3, their "preferred option" is to allow AI to slurp everything, but require an opt-out (we all know how well those work!)

Option 1 (require abiding copyright law) is "not preferred" because it is "likely to make the UK a less attractive location for AI development".

If stealing shit is the basis of your business model, *perhaps this is a problem*?

Nursing eye strain/horrible headache and it's not going away despite painkillers. Gonna take the rest off the day off and hide in a dark room.

Our reasoning: If we and you, and our friends and family don’t respond to the survey, the only people completing it will be those campaigning to take our care away. If the data only shows the views of the tiny minority of people that regret transitioning, or of friends and family members who would have stopped the trans person in their lives from transitioning if they could, then the report into the survey will definitely be used to restrict our access to care.

NHS England have launched a survey for adults who are using an NHS England gender clinic or have in the past 5 years. Given recent experiences with consultations, it could be tempting not to engage. But we do we encourage trans adults in England to take part (reasons in the thread below).

You'll find the survey nhs.welcomesyourfeedback.net/s
