When an LLM outputs, “I panicked”, it does not mean it panicked. It means that based on the preceding sentences, “I panicked” was a likely thing to come next.

It means it’s read a lot of fiction, in which drama is necessary.

It didn’t “panic”. It didn’t *anything*. It wrote a likely sequence of words based on a human request, which it then converted into code that matched those words somewhat. And a human, for some reason, allowed that code to be evaluated without oversight.

almost midnight rivaclaw thinkings: What if I turned the grotty old boombox that I own into a portable raspberry pi based audio player? 🤔

So preparations for #emfcamp

My fursuit has a rotary telephone inside, and I'd be stupid if I didn't get it working on DECT, I already have a Pi Zero in there with a GSM module, but finding something similar for DECT is proving a little more allusive

The best I could find is this module codico.com/en/homea-dhx913-ext

Which actually has a RPi GPIO header, the issues are 1. expensive and 2. is DECT ULE even gonna be compatible?

If anyone can weigh in who knows the setup at EMF or perhaps knows of another approach that can be used I'd be very grateful

We are finally ready to announce that EMF 2026 will happen on July 16-19, 2026, at Eastnor Castle Deer Park, Herefordshire.

Expect more updates soon as we start spinning up the organisation again.

morning Rivaclaw noises, which are pretty much lazy, laying down, howls

Here's Spottacus giving a talk at Berkeley for 'Furries at Berkeley'... In fursuit, of course.

I think it was EF where I first met him, and he had so much energy. He was a personality that radiated.

I only got a few opportunities over the years to talk.

He will be missed.

Millions of books were destroyed in the process of scanning them to feed “AI” databases. You have no idea how upset this makes me. I love books, they kept me company during my childhood/teen years while figuring out myself (although still am) arstechnica.com/ai/2025/06/ant

I can confirm PBS Passport is a VERY good deal for $5/month or less if you choose an annual membership.

Thousands of hours of top notch content. 40 seasons of NOVA. Great kids programs. The new Ken Burns doc on Leonardo da Vinci is excellent.

You can sign up at the link below!

Also fingers crossed will be doing a stream tonight, at around 8pm!

Will do another post when I go live

Any other UK business people and FOSS lovers seen the HMRC changes coming to how business taxes are filed?

> From 1 April 2027, all companies will need to file their annual accounts using commercial software. This means we'll be closing our web and paper-based systems for account filings on that date.

At a quick glance the lists of commercial software contains NO open source/libre options. Looks like a win for proprietary.

Please boost for visibility!

Heard that upper management has confirmed that the site I work at will close in 2027, so now I've got to plan what I'm gonna push for.

I'm gonna push for either a company car or redundancy, due to the commute distance involved.

The new party The Left by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, despite not even having an official name yet, is currently polling at 15%, and hence even with Labour.

This is an incredible feat and I wish best of luck to the party and its success!

I came home from work yesterday to a surprise parcel, which upon opening made me have a happy cry ;_; 💜🐺🌕🏳️‍⚧️
