Ho hum... just sat here keeping an eye on our washing machine as it goes through an empty cycle to clean it, which is also serving as a test to see if I've found what made it get smokey inside the drum the last time it was used.
Only 45 minutes of sitting here to go... :/
Okay, it's borked.
Seems that something plastic got in the main drum area and melted when rubbing against the rubber, creating the smoke and dumping a lot of semi-molten rubber into the pump, causing that to fail too :(
