I guess it's still stronger than a commercial walled garden: if the Mastodon devs become truly unpopular it's not impossible to fork it and continue without them.
More variety in software right now would expedite this process: no need to fork if there's already an alternative.

@mfashby well, if you're looking at the number of instances, then mastodon represents over 50% of all instances
if you look at number of reported instance users, then mastodon counts for more than 70% of all instance users

Getting 500 errors as I try to boost this from pleroma really shines a light I think on why that is the case thus far though. :P
