mastodon meta (fairly important)

@TheHottestPotato you can't have a usable pure AP client because AP doesn't define a large part of what you need to make software usable

interfaces for posting, moderation, etc - these require an api. you seem to be suggesting that this is not part of federation. pedantically speaking, sure, but realistically speaking - the simple act of pushing messages between servers is useless without an interface for people to manipulate those messages in meaningful ways

mastodon meta (fairly important)

@nutomic except that the developers of other projects are trying to work together, but the addendum to what gargron said is that the api documentation is not going to speak to interoperability.

i'm sorry but that definitely is something that mastodon is at fault for, because it's within gargron's power to maintain a healthy ecosystem for the fediverse. app developers will likely not try to implement multiple apis

if mastodon is exclusionary then that's a problem

mastodon meta (fairly important)

@TheHottestPotato the ActivityPub specification defines server to server communication as well as server to client communication. without the clients to create the activities, nothing would be federating. the two elements are both necessary in order for AP to work.

the AP specification does stop short of providing for the things that mastodon's api provides for. however, to me, it would make more sense to modify the specification than splintering the fediverse

subtooting

no really if you're going to disagree with something i write, characterizing it as "this is absurd" is probably the least effective form of argument possible

mastodon meta (fairly important)

@elchapo off you go

mastodon meta (fairly important)

gargron is now on record as saying that the mastodon api is only for mastodon

mastodon.social/@Gargron/10148

what this basically means is that the mastodon ecosystem of apps, helpful tools, etc will only ever be reliably compatible with mastodon with the rest of us jumping through hoops to try to reverse engineer it

so, in summary, a community that is allegedly federated actually does have an avenue through which one platform can control it. just fact.

makes u think?

re: Long post

@charlag @kaniini @lynnesbian @KitsuneAlicia@octodon.social assuming that moderators should have the technical skills to either rig their own mod tools or navigate ones that are obtuse is a barrier to accessibility, tbh. an excellent moderator may not necessarily be someone with a strong technical background.

it's beneficial to have first party support for a moderation interface that is reasonable and provides enough features to address common cases for report resolution, tbh.

Hi I'm not ace but ace people are :valid: and if you are an acephobe please unfollow me thanks

AOC

@DragonessDella@octodon.social @Roxxie_Riot so here's a comeback to that. tankies are not on the left. their governments use oil and natural resources and hoard wealth without distribution. how is this socialist?

i wonder if a good comeback is to just point out that the countries they think you like are actually just capitalist hell holes because capitalism is actually not a governance, it's an economic theory.

AOC

@DragonessDella@octodon.social tbh, if she was actually a radical, then she would propose a tax on high frequency trading. wanna destroy capitalism? literally seize the means of "production". high frequency trades are used to effectively print money in the banking world. well, more specifically, they're a funnel from the lower and middle classes to the ultra rich.

@lynnesbian @slightlyflightyone@vulpine.club wow... there are security reasons why an id that simply counts up isn't as great as a uuid or something else like it...

@kaniini @lynnesbian @KitsuneAlicia@octodon.social that's a fair take, for myself, i see what you mean. with that said, i think that taking what you wrote here and making it something more readily attached to pleroma (a lot of people will not see this message) would go a long way towards curbing some of the - thoughts that exist towards pleroma.

my background isn't in technology, but i have found that people don't know things that they can't find. show them?

@slightlyflightyone@vulpine.club @lynnesbian tbh, i avoid early micro optimizations because ive found that they lead to slower development cycles. optimizations that are done early are often the wrong optimizations. this leads to needing to rework multiple times instead of waiting for the completion of the tapestry and them making adjustments

basically, there's rarely enough good data to optimize for performance early, and just waiting can save time and improve performance

stop πŸ‘πŸ» demonizing πŸ‘πŸ» borderline πŸ‘πŸ» personality πŸ‘πŸ» disorder

@lynnesbian well, im neurodiverse, have a chronic pain condition, a small host of other ailments and issues, and currently have post concussion syndrome. when taking a specific action, i sometimes have to weigh the effort required against the cost in terms of side effects. i can't do everything i wanna do in a day, not even close. so spoons becomes a unit of measurement.

the origin of the story is someone using spoons to equate to energy when asked why she can't do stuff.

@KitsuneAlicia@octodon.social @lynnesbian on the flip side, if everyone believes a certain platform is a heaven for Bad People, then it can happen despite good intentions due to self selection. for instance, if every small instance migrated from mastodon to pleroma today, then you'd see a very different perception of pleroma and the developers working on the project would likely be a bit more diverse.

if we don't use it because reasons, then the ecosystem is starved.

@KitsuneAlicia@octodon.social @lynnesbian actually, the best way to stop hostile users is to make it uncomfortable for them to ask questions. terms of service, community culture, etc - they should all be maintained in a way that makes it clear that abuse is neither tolerated or supported

as a user, ive seen that pleroma doesn't really seem to do this. they're software devs that think a passive attitude towards their hostile users is enough. it isn't, tbh. that's a failing.
