"mastodon.art considered harmful"

this was written by a friend, but i share in the sentiment:

"we're sorry but seriously.

We have an instance full of artists and thats great... but the way its being administrated is being a very bad neighbor as far as instances go.

People are given these massive post limits without any understanding that MOST mastodon instances have 500 and this ruins our feeds

People aren't told the kind of expectation of CWs and such that so many of us have"

"Artists that behave badly are given a platform to ignore everyone else without any adminstration doing anything.

Artists won't get in trouble posting things that are nsfw without a CW or NSFW posts turned on."

"Sorry, we don't care how much you love seeing art and how much it seems like an awesome thing, mastodon.art is actually making mastodon worse instead of better, and as more artists join it without the context of the rest of mastodon, it'll only get worse"

@squirrel I feel like this isn't quite fair. First of all, last I looked at .art's rules, NSFW marker is absolutely required. But CWs are not and should not be strictly required. Like, it's a social contract between you and your followers whether you put a CW on something or not. Especially it absolutely should not be required for long posts. That's not a universal rule. If you don't like how a person is using CWs, mute the person. Do not blame it on how the instance is run.

@Gargron fair, but i see it from a point of view of someone who's trying to cultivate a safe space where the behaviour would be unacceptable

just as why i block any other instance whose coc i don't agree with
