ATT UNIX System V had a program called writer's workbench.

That program had a dictionary in place to scan for and replace sexist language in text.

(I'm watching computer chronicles. They are talking about word processors, and spell check, and grammar check. )

The Unix guy that they are talking to is connected to a computer far away.

Bell labs was doing some really compelling computer stuff circa 1980.

I always forget about the role that they played in the modern evolution of computers.

I understand that there were some logistical hurdles around them selling software, related to the fact that they were a giant fucking monopoly, but that doesn't explain why they have been essentially erased from the history books. (But history is written by the victors, and microsoft was the victor)

Now we're on to Computer Security! Oooh, this will be fun.

I guess this, unlike most things in the digital world, pre-date the CFAA.

"Unfortunately, a system being friendly is almost the opposite of it being secure."

I don't think I've ever disagreed with a statement more in my life.

Secure systems can also be friendly!

It just requires prioritizing both things.

(Now we're talking about BBSs. This is the first time BBSs have been mentioned on this show.)

They are talking directly and only about pirate boards.

"They are used for intelligence purposes among malicious systems hackers."

Now they are rambling about making sure that employees don't abuse their access to your computers through excessive personal use.

what bullshit, yeah?

Ah, there was an oblique reference to the coming CFAA.

Now they are talking about Provably secure systems and talking around functional programming without really knowing much abou tit.

"We've got about 30 seconds left, can we talk about cryptography?"

@ajroach42 on the bright side they won't be talking for very long
