For years I've been confused and amazed by the concept of USAians having a special knife set aside just for opening boxes

The legendary "box cutter"

Turns out it's just a stanley knife

@troubleMoney For some inscrutable reason the word used for that type of knife in German is "Cuttermesser" (with the first part as an English word), lit. "cutter knife"

@troubleMoney In my area, it's called a 'pulp knife'.
Just a common knife.
Also known as a 'cuzifits'
Cuz if i don't have one i can't cut anything.

@troubleMoney
I didn't say that properly. It really is in our language as a meaning.
cuzifits
'cause if it's not in my hand i can't cut anything
Got a cuzifits? I need a cuzifits.
It's related to floorlayers (carpet fitters, foos boten legers...)

@troubleMoney who's Stanley, and why do you give his name to your box cutters? Is he a legendary figure, seen on the loading docks in the twilight, tearing asunder corrugated cardboard and plastic straps? Do the balladeers sing Stanley's tale, is his name whispered in benediction before the first cut?

@edheil He's the bloke that makes them

(it's a genericised trademark since Stanley Works made the best selling ones)
