The shipping news.
This is inflicted upon normal ppl in the uk? I just heard a joke on mock the week.
Now, in my mis-spent youth I did do some commercial fishing and we listened to the canadian coastguard radio (NOT an armed military like the usa's), so that we'd know when to go hide behind an island because of weather or just give it up as a bad job, but the general public didn't listen to that stuff.

@gemlog oh yeah, 4 broadcasts a day on Radio 4

surprisingly popular actually

@troubleMoney Thanks, I didn't know.
I have a lot of stuff from radio 4, because they have some amazing podcasts, but never the shipping news.

@gemlog a lot of people find it quite calming after a long day so they put on the 0048 broadcast before bed

It's 350 words in a very strict format read by an exceedingly calm voice so I can see where they're coming from

@troubleMoney There's one from environment canada (like the met), but you need a radio for the coastguard one. I think you do still anyhow ccg-gcc.gc.ca/folios/01148/doc

@troubleMoney I can see that.
I used to listen to a cbc radio 1 show near midnight, just because who introduced the music had a very deep, calm voice.

Truly, I haven't heard that show since 1980 and the guy is long dead.
He was a bit of a joker though and got in trouble with cbc brass all the time.
One night he cranked all levels to max volume and played 'purple haze' after speaking soothingly... I literally fell off the couch onto the floor! Bastardo! Brilliant and funny
