The length of copyright expiry is fucking insane

I was thinking "oh hey, I should build a gopher site, I wonder what I should put in the misc. files section"

I thought, hey, episodes of the goon show would be nice

The Goon Show was broadcast between 1952 and 1960

You'd assume that they'd be out of copyright by now

No

They come out of copyright in 2083

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY THREE YEARS after the last episode aired

@troubleMoney I'D SAY LIKE... 80% OF PEOPLE ON THAT SHOW ARE NOT ALIVE NOW.

@brokenfingers 100% actually, it's the death of the author +70 years for UK copyright

@Elizafox Quite likely, none of us will be

I mean, medical science is advancing pretty fast but I'm not sure it's going fast enough to keep these things functioning that long

@troubleMoney yep. The modern copyright system is a fuck.

Metropolis (1928, I think?) is still under copyright.

@troubleMoney You can literally thank Disney for that. Every time Mickey Mouse is getting close to going out of copyright, they get Congress to extend copyrights.
It really, truly is a Mickey Mouse law.

NOTHING that was created after Mickey Mouse will ever expire from copyright.

@troubleMoney Unless the Mickey Mouse rulings come into play. Disney keeps getting copyright duration increased.
