What kind of bizarre individual takes diazepam(valium) recreationally?
I have to take it from time to time for anxiety attacks and it always makes me feel like shit for most of the rest of the day

For those who start outside of normal channels it often comes up in tandem with other drug abuse, ie, taking it while coming down from stumulants to take the edge off the crash. Remember that a lot of recreational drug use is often more accurately termed reckless self medication and it may make more sense to you.
Some people will do anything to escape the way they feel.

A lot of people. That said, it usually starts taking it for anxiety much like opiod abuse tends to start out as pain management. Gradually the habit ramps up among those who take more than directed, and before you know it, you can't quit cold Turkey without risking seizures or death as unlike opioids benzodiazepine withdrawal can actually be fatal.
I had a girlfriend hooked on klonopin years ago who went through this. It gets scary.
