I keep tooting pictures and articles about really expensive watches, let's take this back to basics

This is the Casio MQ24-7BLL

It costs less than even the venerable F91-W, it's made of plastic and shows the hour, minute, and second only

Despite that, it's fucking brilliant

For less than the price of a cup of coffee you get a highly legible, accurate enough, reliable watch

And if you want celebrity endorsements, the fucking Pope wears one

@bea I've not actually seen the battery life of the MQ24 anywhere, but this is a watch that's somehow cheaper than a new watch battery so it doesn't matter too much

@troubleMoney yeah, that was just based on experience. how do you feel about the resin bands?

@bea they're not actually that bad

I mean, they feel cheap 'cause they really, really are but they're perfectly serviceable

@troubleMoney agree. only issue i have with them is that they break :c

@bea I haven't tried it with the MQ24 but certainly with the F91-W you can replace the strap with just about any strap that's 18mm wide

You do end up with the strap costing more than the watch though

@troubleMoney Huh, interesting. I don't have a watch at all, and having one as backup would be nice. How does the Casio product name system work? E.g. there is a MQ24-7BLLGF, and an MQ24-1E (twice the price since dark face?) ….

(They are between 7 and 10 Euros here, so "less than the price of a cup of coffee" only is true if you're into really expensive coffee :D)
Thanks for the recommendation in any case(io heh).

@rixx Honestly not entirely sure how it actually works

The MQ24- bit refers to the case and movement in it, then the numbers and letters after are different colourways and dials

Another one you might look at is the F91-W, that's a digital watch that has time, calendar, stopwatch, and alarm

@troubleMoney Tbh the F91-W is pretty much what I think of when I hear "Casio", and to me it looks really ugly. Or at least not something I want on my arm, it … just looks like a Casio calculator. :D The MQ24 looks nice though.

@troubleMoney (Although the F91W kinda tickles my scifi nerd, for some reason. Huh.)

@rixx oh yeah, the F-91W perfectly ticks the "80's future" boxes for me, love the things

Can very much understand why you don't though

@troubleMoney After staring at it for a while it definitely has some charme. :D (The A168WA 1YES too, it even says "ElectroLumenescence" on it. Gotta be maximum retro. <3)

@troubleMoney
Careful, if you get too cheap and practical you run into terrorist watch list territory because cheap Casio's are widely used in making IED's.

@troubleMoney That made me laugh out loud for real :-) "the fucking pope wears one" is not a line one reads very often... ;-)

@troubleMoney also, I drag my sorry ass to mass every sunday :-)
