y'know one would think the internet would understand "this rather scary looking jargon in the TOS actually means that a website is given the ability to display your content, not that they now own all of your content forever" at some point

while i know there are some genuinely fucking odious TOSes and bad actors out there - i kinda thought we'd settled this with the DeviantArt panic

the problem is ultimately that legal jargon being used in that legal context =/= how most people interpreit the word

hence why it's so easy to have people go OMG THEY OWN ALL YOUR STUFF NOW!!!! when really... that's just the legal verbiage they have to use for "and then we store your image on our servers and display it". people see publishing rights and panic but it's more a function of the gap between legal language and common language, as well as legal language vs. new tech.
