Someone just pitched the idea of looking into Returnships, which are internships for people who have had careers already.
On the one hand, possibilities for hiring! On the other hand, this is the most condescending shit I've ever seen in a while.
@sashakovich this is likely a dumb question but
isn't a Returnship just like. hiring somebody straight-up.
like internships are typically the pre-entry-level thing of someone who is new to having a job in that field and having a job at all, that's why there's so much pressure to have interns be extremely low paid or not paid at all
....aren't most hires not in that situation people who have had jobs or even 'careers' before
@wigglytuffitout You would think that! But no, they are being marketed as three to six month internships where you do the work of a full engineer, with mentorship and additional access to networking opportunities, but for 20% less income, with no guarantee of employment at the end of the program.
TBH Internships in engineering are much different than in other industries. They're generally pretty well paid, often between 20%-50% less than what a regular engineer would earn, varying where you go
@sashakovich ok, that makes far more sense - but honestly i feel like a 'returnship' is still a bit of a silly concept because someone launching into a new career in engineering is going to be at the exact same place to benefit
...i'm much too used to other internships that are really often pitched to not-so-STEM folks that amount to "come work for free for us in new york city for 6 months for the amazing benefit of being able to say you worked for us for free. housing credit? what's that?"
@wigglytuffitout Yeah, the difference between the opportunities available to me as a music student vs an engineering student were significant. Not that I got any; at a rough guess only 20% of the engineering student body managed to.
Returnships are aimed at still not-quite-me. I have taken a three year break from my previous career (sales) but because my previous career wasn't engineering, I'm not exactly returning, so I remain, apparently, generally unhireable. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
