listen, if you say you're for dismantling some system that oppresses people as an ally, an then refuse to examine your own shit that you have inevitably learned from that system, that's not being an ally

i am cishet. i am white. i am middle-class. and you know what that means? I Sit The Fuck Down, Shut Up, And Listen.

i also accept and know that it is not a matter of if i screw up, but WHEN.

the ONLY way for me to be a good ally here is to just accept that someday, I AM GONNA FUCK UP. and i accept it by knowing that even though my feelings are going to hurt, even though the knee-jerk reaction is to fight it, MY MOMENTARY UNCOMFY IS WORTH MUCH LESS THAN PEOPLE'S WHOLE GOT DANG LIVES.

so i operate with the humility to realize that i'm going to screw up, AND when i do, i gotta get a ladder out n get over myself.

part of that humility is recognizing that i DON'T know it all. in fact, by being a cishet white middle-class woman, there's some shit i ain't ever gonna know y'all! i will never have first-hand experience on a whole bunch of stuff! that is just how it works!

so i don't claim to know it all. because i don't.

i sit down. i listen. i do not let ego override people's right to live. and i hope that when i do screw up, i can take it on the chin and be better.

@wigglytuffitout shit I spent so much time thinking I was cishet and practicing good allyship like you've defined here that I still tend to do this even when technically my opinion on things might be considered important

@nuttgodd @wigglytuffitout tbh some of the best transition advice I ever got was “wait 2-3 years after coming out before you let anyone cite you on trans issues”

because holy smokes did I ever spend a lot of that time rapidly iterating over spicy takes
