@alexcleac@mastodon.technology they promise a slice of the internet that is safe, respects the user, and is ethical - removing the ability to make reports, and to accept reports from other instances, makes their users more unsafe and makes masto at large unsafe (as there is now no recourse for users to go "hey, this guy on your instance is up to no good! please help me with this!").
that, to me, is the crucial failure - the raw chicken being served up with a side of molded bread and rotten spinach as "healthy".
@alexcleac@mastodon.technology i know that you might be feeling as if this is purposeless, or imagining yourself in purism's shoes.
however, *you're not the one trying to get money for an unsafe product*. and if you think that open-source development should be characterised by this attitude - "give us money for stuff that doesn't work and is unsafe for people to use, and don't dare talk against it because that's just ranting" - well -
try doing something better?
@alexcleac@mastodon.technology if a company is selling a product that is unsafe, especially while talking up how ethical and safe their product is, at that point it becomes an ethical requirement to warn other people that it is an unsafe thing.
not only is this an unsafe thing by itself, but it's introducing unsafe things to the larger masto ecosystem (by totally removing any "hey, your user is harassing ours!" report functionality).
this is something that is not just whining, but instead MUST be warned about.
@alexcleac@mastodon.technology now, there is definitely a point at which it just becomes whining.
but imagine you went to a restaurant and ordered the chicken and came back raw, which is dangerous and unsafe to eat. and when pressed, the restaurant said that the chef serves all chicken raw in the middle.
you'd tell your friends to not eat there, right? that's food that is dangerous to eat. and you'd probably rag on them hard in your review for touting that it's the most healthy food ever.>
@alexcleac@mastodon.technology honestly, i think that ranting is in some cases a useful thing to do.
purism is at this moment trying to sell people a product that i and many others consider fundamentally broken and unsafe to use (removing report feature, not taking reports from other instances). they are doing this while also saying "our product is the safest and most ethical to use".
it's sort of like... having a really bad meal at a restaurant, let's say. (con't because i can't say anything succinctly) >
Really, @purism? You copy a bunch of open-source apps and make it look like they are yours without any mention of the original apps? I think you should delete these apps immediately and publicly apologize. Or at least don't have the audacity to call yourself a "Social Purpose Corporation that does not exploit people and puts doing social good over maximizing profit ", because its obviously not true.
ok i think i should let recent followers know: I Really Know Jack Shit About Development. i have never used linux, i took one (1) entire course of "computer programming for non-cs majors" to fulfill my math requirement in college and promptly forgot all the java i learned as soon as the class ended
the only programming language i've come close to knowing/mastering is hexxing petz.
so uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh listen i just barely know enough to spot some hot tea don't expect much y'all
anyway with the pattern being set, i can't wait for purism's super secure super new super phone to ship, and be revealed as actually an iphone 7 with a big sticker that says ETHICS pasted over the apple logo
is this toot a bit mean? yes
however i think that as people open the hood, as it were, and peek at what lies within, it's utterly hilarious to see how the same ol' same ol' capitalism-bad-actually can entrance a large part of mastodon by running linux and saying "ethics" enough times, rather like dexter in that "omelette du fromage" episode of dexter's lab
( @purism / #purism voice) we're an extremely ethical company. you can tell because in our social network, nobody is able to make any abuse reports and all abuse reports incoming from other masto instances are rejected. nobody would ever need information from such things or to use such tools.
ethics! aka: if you're not a cishet white techbro and therefore might be harassed on the internet, feel free to use our service to Get Fucked!
@trwnh i can barely understand the technical nitty gritty here, but.. god bless you for going through this absolute trainwreck
stripping out the ability to report abuse. amazing. this is absolutely peak tech dudebro
so i can barely, *barely* follow the open source programming slang, but am i right in understanding that that @purism is standing around crowing about how they're so totes ethical you guise (SOOOOOO ETHICAL!) while using large swaths of open-source software without following the code of use for those public licenses, not giving credit to the community that made the software but instead just slapping the @purism logo on top?
....amazing, can't wait for their next move (see img for prediction)
A bit curious of @purism to fork @Tusky / K9 Mail and not even mention that anywhere on their website or app listings?
Also I can note the following:
- What is the point of the forks? Do they even at least pre-fill the "social.librem.one" domain for users?
- Is the source even published at all? If not, it's violating GPL. I can't find anything on their Github, at least.
i know there are definitely limits but i'm glad the mcelboys are out there being visibly some cishet white dudes who genuinely want to do better, to deal with problematic shit they have said, who admit fault for it and don't shirk away from doing that work
and also that they're out there doing that while bluntly stating that it's not about a pc culture war, it's about doing a better job, and their job is to entertain folks, and thus it's part of being a better person *and* a better comedian.
i kinda want to figure out what the ten-year-old tweets in question are, but i think it's probably better left alone
honestly even if you're not a fan of the mbmbam style of comedy - it's kinda absurdist marmite - i'm glad that the mcelroy brothers exist in pop culture to be a bunch of cishet white dudes who are genuinely interested in learning from mistakes and doing so humbly, being openly ready to listen, learn, do better, and not give buckets of dodges and excuses.
30 y/o - token cishet - tumblr refugee. spoonie/15 chronic conditions in a trenchcoat/actual cyborg. just hangin' in there
