@Kat@snouts.online i try to let people know i'm new when it's applicable and honestly, i can't think of a single time when anyone's said "oh fuck you" and given me grief for it. mostly it's "you'll be fine, this isn't so bad", "i'm new too!", "i love this fight, do you need strats?" and the like.
maybe helping him make a macro he could mash at the start of dungeons would be a good way to give him an icebreaker and let him see how different the cultures are?

@Kat@snouts.online maybe help him put together a macro or how to say hello at the start of dungeons?
i found one of the biggest things between ffxiv and WoW culture-wise for me, going back to WoW for a little while, was how nobody in parties talked unless it was absolutely necessary. i actively weirded some people out saying hello at the start of dungeons.
meanwhile in ffxiv, "hi everyone" is something that i get a response to most of the time, even if we don't talk for the rest of the dungeon.

@Kat@snouts.online i have my Official Mentor Crown i can always slap on if talking to him in-game will help LMAO
the vast majority of people are i think like me - as long as you show up and make an obvious attempt at trying, we're totally solid, and most people are in fact really excited to share the story with you if it's your first time seeing it. after all, ffxiv is a really fuckin good game, lol
but most of my stories of direct comfort would be me telling your dad about the ACTUAL bad behavior LOL

@Kat@snouts.online >so to speak, people know that if they want to shame somebody for doing low dps by busting out the numbers, they're also exposing themselves to being banned.
there's also a lot more of a mentor culture, and mentor status is, well, a thing in-game, and as much as a lot of mentors are fuckin awful, i think that really helps the culture. also the sprout markers so everyone knows you're new and gives you slack. explaining that might help your dad feel more comfortable trying it?

@Kat@snouts.online WoW is a lot more fucking ruthless player culture wise, it's one of the reasons why my mom when she played only did group content if pressed :(
ffxiv is generally a lot more of a relaxed player base i've found. the thing that really helps is mods being verboten (or ok, "verboten"). a lot of dickishness in WoW is driven by people running parsers constantly and spamming those numbers in chat to shame people. people still do run parsers in ffxiv, but as it's technically illegal>
a meta observation
it's the painful lesson that we all gotta learn at some point and another -
one, your feelings are valid for you to have, your struggles are valid to struggle with
two, that validity does not mean you get to hurt other people
both are true, both at the same time, both in all the same situations, and that's what makes the whole dang thing suck more often than not.
a meta observation
i have sympathy and patience for people's cri de coeur, and i try to have as much as possible
however, it is becoming increasingly easy to see one person having an untagged meltdown, then another person getting triggered into an untagged meltdown, then another person, etc., etc...
i'm not saying struggling with mental illness is bad, or that these people should be ashamed
i am saying maybe it's good to reflect on what you are putting out into the ecosystem from time to time
if you doubt the efficacy of my stand in battle, may i refer you to the footage of that time Bjork got fed up with a paparazzi and slapped the hell out of them
i see people talking about what their stands would be in the jojos and despite not having read/watched the jojos, i can tell you what mine would be:
bjork
no not a fantastical being inspired by a song or even her entire discography. literally bjork. just bjork. i just summon up an eccentric icelandic woman to slap the shit out of my foes. that's it
i have never played a Devil May Cry game but through osmosis of hearing friends talk about it, i can guarantee you that this has happened, if not on a daily basis, in the kitchen when the star characters of said video game go to cook.
they absolutely have a plastic skellingtom hand for pasta stirring. V's probably the one making the melodramatic snapchats while Dante is using it to toss the pasta at the wall to see if it's done yet
