i mean i'm glad the able accounts exist but b r u h. do you know how quick 2k of savings goes in an emergency??? if i needed to save up for a wheelchair, sure, that's something the able account will let me spend my savings on. probably furniture as well.

but consider: one of my niblings gets sick. i need to fly up to help. the flight up, the meals i eat there because i'm not able to cook, a toy to distract other niblings or taking them all to see a movie - uncle sam says nope!!!!!

what chaps my ass though is that they demand you have a certain amount of money in the abled account before you get to put any money into their mutual funds/investment funds. (because... realistically... i'm disabled, i'm 30, i need to have been saving for retirement yesterday...)

also you can only use account funds for ~approved purchases~, which is better than nothing for sure, but. see gif

the good news is that the legit lawyers who do disability are halfway to social workers a lot of times - it's not really a specialty you go into for the money alone lol - so they might know resources available to you immediately as well (fingers crossed!)

@Lumb don't give up tho!! like i said it's a bastard of a system and... is really good at trying to grind people down unfortunately

@Lumb no problem! if you look for a lawyer, look exclusively for one where you don't need to pay anything to them, but they instead take their pay as a cut of the like "back pay" they do (when you get disability, they'll go "oh ok, so you've been disabled since x, so you'll get benefits going forward, but also we're going to pay you like we've been paying you since x", usually split up into about 3 big lump sums). that's how to avoid the dodgy lawyer motherfuckers, basically.

you're probably well on top of it, but if you don't have a lawyer, definitely look into getting one - and don't be discouraged if you get rejected the first time around. honestly they reject absolutely everyone the first time around and seem to only sit and look at the evidence eventually if there's a lawyer's name in there somewhere too. it's a fucking bastard of a system at first for sure. :(
